
Experts in the field of gemology have developed methods of grading and certifying diamonds based on the characteristics most important to their value as a gem. The four characteristics for a diamond are known informally as the “four Cs.” The four C’s include cut, carat, color, and clarity.
Cut
The cut of a diamond describes the manner in which the diamond has been shaped and polished from its beginning form as a rough diamond to its final shape. Often times, cut is also commonly referred to as shape. The better the proportions of a diamond, the more brilliant and sparkly the diamond will be. The best cut diamonds are those that have been cut by a master diamond cutter with exactly placed facets which create the most splendid combination of luster, beauty, and brilliance. Historically, the most common cut of diamond is the round brilliant cut, which was first developed by mathematician and gem enthusiast Marcel Tolkowsky. Tolkowsky created a mathematical model of ideal diamond cuts. However, because of advancements in technology, Tolkowsky’s model is now superseded by GIA Facetware software that is the culmination of about 20 years of research on diamond cuts.
